The PI says that SB% is accurate back to 1956. Since then no right handed pitcher has pitched more than 1000 innings and allowed a lower percentage of successful base stealers than Chris Carpenter.

In 2008 Cole Hammels went the entire season without throwing a wild pitch. Hammels also only hit 1 batter. An impressive display of control, no doubt, but there have been players who have done better. Since 1901, 34 pitchers have qualified for the ERA title in their respective leagues without registering a HBP or WP. The most recent was Greg Maddux on 2006. Here is the list ranked by BB/9IP.

Jeff Kent has just announced his retirement.
I don't have the time to write a full column right now, but I think a reasonable HOF argument can be made for Kent. I believe it's possible to successfully argue that he's the 3rd-best offensive 2B of all time, behind Rogers Hornsby and Joe Morgan, and just ahead of Ryne Sandberg.
His HOF Standards is 50.9 (average HOFer is 50) and his HOF Monitor is 122.5 (likely HOF is > 100.) A lot higher than you thought, eh?
Let's hear your arguments for why Kent deserves to be in the HOF.

From 1994-1998 Roger Clemens was the second oldest pitcher to throw 1000 innings. Nevertheless, Clemens would continue pitching strong and over the next 5 years (1999-2003) he would once again pitch 1000 innings, this time as the oldest pitcher to do so (during that time period). Second to Clemens was a pitcher less than a year younger than Roger, Jamie Moyer. Amazingly enough, over the next five years Moyer would still be able to throw another 1000 innings, as he became the oldest to do it during that time frame. This seems to bode well for the number 2 man on the current list. Who was it? None other than Greg Maddux.

Wins & losses are ridiculously overrated stats for starting pitchers. I mean, sure, the pitcher himself has a lot to do with whether he gets a W or a L in a given game. But there are numerous other factors that are largely out of his control, the three biggest ones being offensive run support, quality of the opposing starting pitcher, and the range & performance of his defense.
Anyway, to illustrate my point, here are the "worst" 20-win seasons from the last 40 years, as ranked by lowest K/BB ratio:

While there are a number of good-to-great names on this list, I challenge you to come up with another list of 20-game winners that is less impressive overall in terms of collective career achievements. Even this list, most losses in a 20-win season, isn't as bad.
Strikeouts are an important part of the game and very few starting pitchers with a low strikeout rate (or a high walk rate) experience long-term success in the game.

In honor of today's inauguration of a new American president, here are a few "presidential" facts about El Presidente, Dennis Martinez:

I couldn't find too many major stat totals equaling exactly 2009.
Carlos Delgado has 2009 games played:

As a teaser for next year, there are 3 different guys with exactly 2010 career hits:

Interestingly, Delgado is on that list too, but of course he'll fall off both lists once he plays one or more games this coming season.

Today, I was wondering, from 2002 through 2008, how many big league pitchers younger than age 29 have posted four or more seasons where they made at least 32 starts, threw at least 190 innings, and won at least 10 games?
Look at the list:
From To Ages Seasons
+-----------------+----+----+-----+-------+
Jon Garland 2002 2008 22-28 7
Barry Zito 2002 2007 24-29 6
Mark Buehrle 2002 2008 23-29 6
Johan Santana 2004 2008 25-29 5
John Lackey 2003 2007 24-28 5
Javier Vazquez 2002 2006 25-29 5
Roy Oswalt 2002 2007 24-29 5
Brandon Webb 2005 2008 26-29 4
Danny Haren 2005 2008 24-27 4
Dontrelle Willis 2004 2007 22-25 4
Jason Marquis 2004 2007 25-28 4
Carlos Zambrano 2003 2007 22-26 4
We can see that Jon Garland is the only pitcher to make this cut in all seven seasons (between 2002 and 2008). Is that young and durable, or what?

Four hundred total bases in a season is one of the truly magical numbers. It's far rarer than hitting .300 or driving in 100 runs in a season. In fact, in baseball history, it's been done just 29 times:

A few things to notice about this list:
- So much for the claim that the current is era is the greatest offensive era in history. 19 of the 29 seasons came before 1940. Keep in mind that there were fewer games in a season back then, too, making it so much more difficult.
- 2001 was a flukey year, with 4 different guys doing it. But it's not so flukey, with 6 other years with multiple guys doing it, including another quartet in 1930.
- Most of these seasons are also among the highest single-season RBI totals.
There have been some near misses recently, although it's surprising that this list is actually shorter than the guys to break 400.
