Given these, what do you think the record is for most career games pitched with no game starts or games finished? These are guys who appeared only as middle relievers.

Think about it for a while, and then click here to see the list.

Shocking, eh?

It seemed wrong and impossible to me, too, until I looked at it this way. Here are the only guys to ever appear in 10+ games in a season without a start or game finished.

To make the career list, a guy would had to have done that every year of his career. I wonder if Franklin Nunez knows that he holds this MLB record.

Alex Rodriguez has 32 home runs this year.  If he hits 3 more, it will be his 12th season with 35 or more. Here are the players with 10 or more 35+ homer seasons.

250,000th Home Run Ever Hit - Baseball-Reference.com

The most home runs hit in a day in the last 52 years was 62 on July 2, 2002. Given all of the rainouts on the east coast likely today, I'm guessing we won't exceed that today, so tomorrow looks like the big day.

We are averaging 2 home runs/game this year, so we are about 32 games short of the milestone. Could happen late tomorrow or perhaps in the east coast games on Monday.

UPDATE: Now at 249,969. I'm maintaining a live count at BaseballThinkFactory.org.

Brett Myers

6th September 2008

Longtime major leaguer Brett Myers spent the All-Star break this year in the minors, thanks to a horrendous first half. He was sent down to work some things out, but returned in July to the Phillies.

Obviously, he figured something out in the minors.

Check out his splits so far this year:

I Split G GS GF W L S CG SHO IP ERA H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP
+-+------------+---+---+--+--+--+--+--+---+-----+------+---+---+---+--+---+---+---+---+

   2nd Half 9 9 0 6 1 0 1 1 63.2 1.55 53 12 11 2 15 1 56 3

More than 4 runs have come off his ERA and his HR rate has all but vanished. His K/BB ratio has improved considerably, as has his hits/9IP.

If the Phillies stand any chance of overtaking the Mets again this year just like they did last season, they'll need Myers to continue his fantastic second half.

High Scoring in Losses

6th September 2008

A reader pointed out that this year the Marlins two highest scoring games have both been losses. It turns out that this is very rare. A couple National Association Teams did it. The 1872 Nationals and the 1873 Maroons, but the 76 Cubs are the only other team to do that. Of course, the Marlins could get out of this group yet this season. The Cubs and Marlins did both win their third highest scoring games.

Best Ever Post-Season Relief Effort?

Here's a fun little list that I worked up with Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Post-Season Pitching Game Finder.  It's great relief work in post-season games where the player's team won the game:

Interesting that Mark Whiten's 4-HR game is the only one to make this list.
