The most average batters of all time
Following up on my post a while back about pitchers, here are batters with a lifetime OPS+ between 99 and 101, ranked by most career plate appearances.

It's interesting that Bill Buckner comes out on top. I've always thought of him as an average player--not in a negative sense, but as a guy who might not have been the most talented or athletic, but who ground it out and ended up being pretty productive. He's the only guy on this list to play 1B or 3B as his primary position, which isn't surprising since others with this many PAs would probably be above an OPS+ of 101.
Rather, this list is populated by shortstops and second basemen primarily, which again is not that surprising. For years, these were positions from which little offensive production was expected, and therefore guys at these positions who got an OPS+ of 100 were probably fairly far above average for a 2B or SS, and therefore got a lot more career PAs.
There are lots of other interesting things about this list, but I won't go into too much more detail.

Derek Jeter Chasing Pete Rose?
Interesting Rosenthal article about Jeter's chances to catch Pete Rose's hit record. (Bonus: Rosentahl uses Bill James's Favorite Toy). Let's look at the PI and see what it says.
Well, Derek Jeter just finished his age 33 season, and based on that he's 18th all-time on the hit list through that age. Then again, Pete Rose was 22nd.
That's not entirely fair -- had he been born a week later, he would've just finished his age 32 season. Pesky June/July bubble. I realize that the June 30 / July 1 cut-off is the most sensible mark, but for people within a few days of it (as is the case with Jeter) it obscures as much as it illuminates.
Jeter has 2356 hits. Only six men have gotten that many hits though age 32 (and only 3 made it to 3,000!?!?).
Impressive, eh? Well, he needs 1900 more hits. Not only is Pete Rose the only man to do that through age 34-onward, but only a trio have more than 1500 from that point onward. Ouch. Apparently, aging hurts players.
Move Jeter's birthday back by a week, and now three men have done it, but no one else is close.
Obviously, the odds are against him, but if he stays healthy and consistent, he's got a shot. He's lead-off hitter in a great line-up so should get plenty of at bats.

The Nagying Urge To Keep Stepping On The Hill
The question came to mind: “How many guys have made at least 5 starts for a team in a season and were really bad pitchers that year?” And, before I closed the loop on that, the question evolved into “How many guys have made at least 5 starts for a team in a season and were really bad pitchers that year – and did it more than once in their career?”
So, I turned to Baseball-Reference.com’s Play Index Pitching Season Finder and set the controls for: For single seasons, From 1901 to 2007, (requiring GS>=5, IP>=20, and ERAp<=70), sorted by greatest Seasons matching criteria – and I found this list.
As you can see from the list/link, there were 19 pitchers to pull this trick (of GS>=5, IP>=20, and ERAp<=70) three times in their career – in baseball history. But, only ONE of those 19 did it five times in his career: Charles Nagy. See the following for Charles:
Cnt Age Tm Lg Year GS IP ERA+ G CG SHO GF W L W-L% SV H R ER BB SO ERA HR BF AB 2B 3B IBB HBP SH SF GDP SB CS Pk BK WP BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+ Pit Str +----+---+---+--+----+--+-----+----+---+--+---+--+--+--+-----+--+---+---+---+---+---+------+--+----+----+--+--+---+---+---+---+---+---+--+--+--+--+-----+-----+-----+-----+----+----+----+ 1 23 CLE AL 1990 8 45.2 66 9 0 0 1 2 4 .333 0 58 31 30 21 26 5.91 7 208 184 9 0 1 1 1 1 6 2 2 1 1 1 .315 .386 .478 .864 141 2 26 CLE AL 1993 9 48.2 70 9 1 0 0 2 6 .250 0 66 38 34 13 30 6.29 6 223 205 11 0 1 2 2 1 6 10 2 0 0 2 .322 .367 .463 .830 121 3 33 CLE AL 2000 11 57 60 11 0 0 0 2 7 .222 0 71 53 52 21 41 8.21 15 267 237 12 4 2 2 5 2 0 5 1 0 0 1 .300 .359 .574 .933 129 1011 594 4 34 CLE AL 2001 13 70.1 70 15 0 0 1 5 6 .455 0 102 53 50 20 29 6.40 10 325 298 25 0 1 0 3 4 10 3 1 0 0 2 .342 .379 .527 .906 136 1150 723 5 35 CLE AL 2002 7 48.2 49 19 0 0 7 1 4 .200 0 76 51 48 13 22 8.88 10 230 211 16 2 1 2 2 2 3 6 0 0 0 1 .360 .399 .597 .996 164 792 485
Part of me wants to give Nagy credit for making them tear the uniform off his back. But, the other part of me wants to say “Dude, you should have thrown in the towel after 1999 – because, that, my friend, was not a pretty run for you, from 2000 to 2002.”

Greatest hits from 1988
Since it's the weekend, I thought I'd recycle a bunch of PI searches that I've posted over at the 88 Topps Cards blog.
For example:
- Scott Garrelts makes the top 10 list for lowest WHIP in a season in the 1980s with 190+ IP.
- Who had the most RBI in any season in the 1980s for a catcher? You might be surprised.
- Ron Karkovice once had two go-ahead plate appearances in the same game where both were reaches-on-error. (Note I linked to the wrong box score in that post, but somebody else picked it up in the comments.)
- HoJo is still rockin' the career 30/30 list.
- Jose Oquendo has among the fewest total bases among players with 3500+ PAs.
- Dan Petry was one of the winningest pitchers from 1982 to 1985.
- Who has the most career saves among pitchers with at least 100 complete games? If you call yourself a baseball fan, you'd better be able to get this one.
- Ken Oberkfell had some big walk-off walks.
- Like Oquendo, Dave Magadan was not so hot with the total bases either.
That's it for now. We've got a contest over there that ends on Monday, if you'd like to enter.

More HR than walks
This REALLY surprised me.
I checked to see if anybody has ever had more homers in a season than walks, and the answer that it's happened lots and lots of times.
Here are guys who had 20 or more homers but 19 or fewer walks.

I did some checking, and I think Dawson has the record for most homers in a season with fewer walks than homers.
Tony Armas finished his career with 251 HR and 260 walks. If not for 1988, his second-to-last year where he homered 13 times and walked 22 times, he might have finished up even.
I couldn't find anyone with at least 100 HR who had fewer walks, but it's not an easy thing to currently do with the PI. (Really, you'd need to search for HR>100,BB<99, then HR>101,BB<100, then HR>102,BB<101, etc.) I proposed to Sean that he add a simple dropdown arithmetic operator to the PI. This way, we could do something like minimum 100 career HR, show me the players with the largest value for HR MINUS WALKS. Virtually all players will have a negative value, but there must be a few out there with a positive value.
