Cliff Lee’s win streak

24th August 2009

Cliff Lee is now tied with Jorge de la Rosa for the longest streak in 2009 with wins in consecutive starts:

Lee's streak spans his time with the Indians and first 4 starts with the Phillies, and is current.

After the Brewers got amazing output after acquiring C. C. Sabathia last year from the Indians, the Phillies seem poised to get the same production from another Cleveland castoff this year. One big difference is that Lee will still be under contract with the Phillies next season as well.

Most consecutive starts, more than 9 IP

5th August 2009

Raphy's post the other day made me wonder about longest streaks for an individual pitcher with more than 9 IP. That means at least 9.1 innings in each start. Here are the leaders since 1954: Read the rest of this entry »

Post-season hit streaks

3rd August 2009

I suspect that this has been posted here before, but I was just looking at post-season hit streaks:

I recalled that Ramirez and Jeter shared the lead with fairly recent streaks. I had totally forgotten about Pat Borders' performance. He hit particularly well in the 1992 playoffs, with 16 hits in 42 AB, including 3 doubles, 2 homers, and 6 RBI.

Another interesting thing is the length of time for Tim Raines' streak, far longer than the others on this list. He went from a playoff appearance in 1981 with the Expos to a 1996 appearance with the Yankees. Not to mention the fact that the streak includes hitting in all 6 ALCS games in 1993 with the White Sox. Sheesh.

Most Consecutive Wins with a Save

22nd July 2009

On August 19, 1997 the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5 beginning a stretch in which they went 20-17. While this may seem unremarkable, the Reds managed to record a save in every single one of those wins.  It was the longest streak of wins saved by any team from 1954-2009 (and presumably ever). As a quick point of reference, the longest such streak this year was 8 games by the Royals earlier this month. Here are the longest streaks 1954-2009:

Felix Hernandez has the longest active streak with 8 starts in a row, but Adam Wainwright and youngster J. A. Happ are working on active 5-game streaks of their own.

Happ has slipped under most people's radar since he started in the bullpen, only moving to the rotation when Brett Myers was unable to pitch anymore. Also, despite his 7-0 record, the Phillies lost several of his other starts, including 1-run late-game losses to the Yankees, Mets, Orioles, and Reds.

Lee's got a long way to go to match Ryan Zimmerman's 30-gamer from earlier this season.
