When Vladimir Guerrero drove in two runs with his ninth inning single last night, he became the 10th player in postseason history to come to bat with his team losing with 2 outs in the ninth and hand his team the lead:

8th October 2009
During last night's ALDS game between the Twins and Yankees, Mariano Rivera walked Nick Punto in the top of the 9th inning, with two outs, and the Yankees ahead in the game.
I doubt Joe Girardi was sweating Rivera issuing that walk, since the Yankees were up by five at the time, and, after all, it's Mo Rivera on the hill. But, in general, I would expect that it must kill a manager to see his "closer" issue a two-out walk in the 9th inning of a post-season game...when his team has the lead. This led me to wondering how often this situation happens. And, thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Post-Season Pitching Event Finder, the answer is easy to find. What I found interesting was the "leader board" for allowing 2-out walks in the 9th inning of a post-season game when pitching with a lead. Here it is:
Jason Isringhausen 4
Tom Henke 3
Mariano Rivera 3
Brad Lidge 3
Fernando Valenzuela 2
Rawly Eastwick 2
Armando Benitez 2
Red Ruffing 2
Granted, Rivera is high on this list partly because he's thrown in so many post-season games. But, still, it's interesting that he's issued this type of base-on-balls three times in his career - and is knocking on the door of becoming the all-time leader of doing this...er...for a lack of a better word..."sin."
In any event, Nick Punto now joins Bret Boone and David Justice as the only batters in baseball history to work Mariano Rivera for a 2-out walk in the 9th inning when their team was trailing. I guess that's something Punto can tell his grand-kids about someday...

According to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Post Season Batter Events Finder - only 4 post-season games, to date, have ended via an error. Here's the details on each situation:
Many know about Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. But, how many remember Game 2 of the 1996 ALDS or Game 4 of the 1969 World Series? And, for sure, I don't think many today can call upon Game 3 of the 1914 World Series from their own personal eye-witness memory.
Poor Joe Bush, Pete Richert, Bill Buckner and Dean Palmer - for making those errors. Gotta be a player's worst nightmare, right? Of course, all these games were already tied when these errors occurred...so, it's not like any of these miscues turned a "W" into an "L." Now, that would really leave a mark...no doubt.
Note: Three of these puppies came on bunts. So, maybe that's a smart play, when you're at home, in October, in extra innings, with the score tied?

I've been making some updates and improvements to the postseason stats on the site.
First off, the playoff stats on the player and postseason summary pages now match what we have in our pbp database. In the past, these were essentially two different sources with some crossover. It all now jibes with our pbp database. The main changes are that 1981 is not messed up for pitcher IP's as it was, the recent years have full stat lines, we now have wpa info for the 1914 WS. The fact the Braves played in Fenway messed things up and we got that fixed.
Second, I have added a best_of column to our database, so you can now search for just game 7's (or 5's) in the Game Finders and Postseason Event Finders.
I've re-run all of the postseason pages, so they should be ready to roll for next week.

I was surprised to see in Andy's post this morning how many pitchers have hit grand slams in recent years. I also noticed that, not surprisingly, none have done it past the sixth inning of a game. In fact, no pitcher has hit a grand slam after the sixth inning since Don Robinson in 1985. In all, 7 pitchers have hit a late inning grand slams since 1954. With one exception, all of those pitchers were up by at least 3 runs at the time. The only pitcher since 1954 to hit a late inning grand slam in a close game was Rick Wise in 1971. Wise had already homered in the game and by the end of the day would have 6 home runs on the season. Here are the 7 late inning grand slam pitchers:

Raphy wrote about Chris Carpenter's great day with the bat yesterday and I wanted to add a little bit more.
Carpenter hit a grand slam and was the first pitcher in 2009 to do so.

Lots and lots of good players populate this list, both the batters and pitchers.
I checked the record of the teams in these games. Here are the outcomes of the 22 games (from the point of view of the team hitting the leadoff HR) as you read down the column above.
LWLWWWLWWLWWWWWLWLWWWW
So that's a record of 16-6 (.727) in those 22 games. Not too surprising--with run-scoring at a premium in the playoffs, single runs have a bigger impact on the outcome.
A few other tidbits:
- There is one series--the 2007 ALDS--that appears twice here, with the Yankees' Johnny Damon and the Indians' Grady Sizemore both leading off different games in that series with homers. The Indians won both games, as well as the series.
- Just 1 out of these 22 games was Game 1 of its series. That's a little surprising, although so many Game 1's are pitched by aces that it's not too surprising.
- Finally, I would remiss if I didn't mention how much more common the leadoff HR has become, with more than half of these games coming since the 1990s. While there are more playoff games now thanks to the extra layers of playoffs (meaning more total playoff games per year and hence more chances for leadoff HR) the more recent era is over-represented, thanks to the increased overall prevelance of home runs in the game.

22nd September 2009
I just got curious to see how many RBI the top HR-hitters average per HR. Let me show you what I mean.
I'm starting with the B-R page for 2009 batting leaders. The current HR leaders are:
Gee, Pujols on top of a leaders list. Who'dve thunk it?
Anyway, let's look up how many RBI each guy has on his homers so far this year.
The easiest way to do that is go to the event finder for each guy (here is Pujols', for example) and look up his 2009 homers. If you check out that result, you can see that Pujols has 76 RBI on his 47 HR.
Let me summarize the results for each guy:
Pujols: 76/47 = 1.62 RBI/HR
Reynolds 67/43 = 1.56 RBI/HR
Howard 79/41 = 1.93 RBI/HR
Fielder 71/40 = 1.78 RBI/HR
Pena 61/39 = 1.56 RBI/HR
Gonzalez 57/39 = 1.46 RBI/HR
Dunn 63/37 = 1.70 RBI/HR
Teixeira 56/37 = 1.51 RBI/HR
Bay 63/36 = 1.75 RBI/HR
Werth 55/34 = 1.62 RBI/HR
Lee 55/34 = 1.62 RBI/HR
Interesting variation. Howard is pretty far out in the lead among this group, but there are so many things to consider:
- This list includes only the top HR hitters. Nothing says that a guy further down on the HR leaderboard couldn't have a higher ratio than Howard.
- This stat depends heavily on how many guys are on base when the HR hitter is batting, and obviously he has little control over that.
- It's not surprising that Howard's value is so much higher than Werth's. Werth hits further down in the same batting order as Howard, meaning that Jayson has much less benefit of the #1-#3 hitters getting on base, plus he's usually the guy batting with the bases empty after Howard homers.
- Note that this stat does have a significant affect on RBI total. Compare the lowest guy on this list, Gonzalez, to Howard. There's almost half an RBI per HR difference in their rates. That means about 20 fewer RBI for Gonzalez this year (based on his HR production of about 40.)
- I wonder if this stat is random. In other words, I'd be curious to look at the same stat for each of these guys over their careers and see if it changes a lot from year to year. I figure it probably would since it has more to do with the team than anything else, although each guy's position in the batting order (which generally stays fairly constant) probably matters a lot too.
- I want to look at this on a team-by-team basis and I'll do that later this week.

On September 18, 2009, Ichiro Suzuki joined Marco Scutaro, Bill Mueller, and Bill Selby as the only batters to hit a regular season, bottom of the 9th inning, walk-off homerun off against Mo Rivera.
Vernon Wells also hit a walk-off homer against Rivera – but it was in the 11th inning of a tie game. Suzuki, Scutaro, Mueller and Selby all did it in the ninth, with their team trailing.
Suzuki, Scutaro, and Selby all did it after two-outs. Mueller did it after one out.
How do I know this? Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitcher Events Finder for Mariano Rivera - looking at all "Homerun" events for Rivera and setting the filter for "Away Games", and "as last play of game." Here's the results - showing the batters to do it before Ichiro:

15th September 2009
I've previously mentioned how much I like the little stats shown on the mobile version of ESPN.com. Recently, they noted that Prince Fielder was the first guy since 1954 to be involved in a triple play and walk-off homer in the same game. That would be this game in which Fielder received a throw at first base as part of a triple play and hit the game-winning homer in the 12th inning.
I was curious to find that 1954 game so I started with a team batting even finder to find all walk-off homers that year:

By clicking on the date of each game I found out that it was the very last one that year that featured the triple play. In that game, Kluszewski did exactly what Fielder did--fielded a triple play at first base and later hit a walk-off homer.
I wonder if the 1954 Reds has as much fun as the 2009 Brewers did with Fielder's home run. Check out the fanfare on MLB.com.
