that trade was bizare when they made it and it hasn't gotten any less bizare. If the Yankees had actually done something in the playoffs in these last 3 seasons, it would easily go down as one of the most lopsided trades of all time.

Victorino is a decent replacement for Abreu, but I still think the Phillies should have kept Abreu. And what did they get for Abreu? Squat: Matt Smith (pitched 12 innings in 23 games over 2006 and 2007, then in 2008 they sent him to the Rookie League and then A ball; he turns 30 next year), C.J. Henry (released by the Phillies in 2007, and signed again with the YANKEES!!!), Carlos Monastrios (who still hasn't played in the minors as far as I can tell), and Jesus Sanchez (a catcher who hit .186 for the A-ball Lakewood BlueClaws this year).

Despite being tied or 26th in RBI, Abreau is second in RBI in the 7th inning or later. 42 out of his 100 RBI have come from the 7th inning on.

David: Espn.com has the info. Among players qualifying for the batting title Abreu is fourth in p/pa this season. Swisher, Cust, and Dunn are ahead of him. Giambi is a hair behind him.

It would be interesting to know how players rank in number of pitches per at/bat. Abreu has to rank pretty high on the list, and making the opposing pitchers work, while not the most valuable of offensive contributions, has SOME value to your team.

Abreu may have been below his prime these last few years. But it helps when you're batting behind Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter and have A-Rod behind you for protection. It also helps the Yankees bottom of the order guys are probably paid more combined than some entire starting lineups.
