And what did they get for Abreu? Squat: Matt Smith (pitched 12 innings in 23 games over 2006 and 2007, then in 2008 they sent him to the Rookie League and then A ball; he turns 30 next year), C.J. Henry (released by the Phillies in 2007, and signed again with the YANKEES!!!), Carlos Monastrios (who still hasn't played in the minors as far as I can tell), and Jesus Sanchez (a catcher who hit .186 for the A-ball Lakewood BlueClaws this year). Abreu has to rank pretty high on the list, and making the opposing pitchers work, while not the most valuable of offensive contributions, has SOME value to your team. But it helps when you're batting behind Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter and have A-Rod behind you for protection.
