  1. What's next? A broken tooth from an overzealous go at the postgame buffet?

  2. Not related:

Can anyone explain to me why Orel Hershiser's consecutive scoreless inning streak is 59 and not 60? He did pitch in 59 complete innings scoreless, but he got the third out to start the streak, and then the first run he gave up was with 2 outs? (granted, that was at the start of the next season, so I can understand why you might set it up as a one season record or something)

  3. Kahuna Tuna Says:

    My turn.

Middle-relief guy gets his feet tangled up pitching from the stretch with no runners on, avoids the balk but messes up his wrist trying to keep from falling.

  4. Johnny Twisto Says:

Thomas, I don't think you can count partial innings in a scoreless streak because teams get three outs to play with in attempt to score. Getting an out in an inning in which runs score shouldn't be considered part of a scoreless streak. It looks like MLB changed this at some point, because Drysdale's record used to be considered 58.2 IP, and is now considered 58. If a reliever entered partway through an inning, I think you could credit him with 1/3 or 2/3 scoreless IP, but not someone who starts the inning.

If you include the postseason, Hershiser got to 67 consecutive!!!

  5. Spartan Bill Says:

This never happened when Soupy Sales was still alive.

  6. I was unaware Drysdale's count had been changed. Thanks JT!

  7. OT, but can i suggest Larry Walker for a future HOF poll, if he hasn't been the subject of one already?

i remember some ESPN announcer flatly stating toward the end of his career that his numbers for the hall "just aren't there", because he had been hurt so much. i'm not sure i agree.

also, Todd Helton, though i highly doubt he'll get in (via the writers anyway.)

  8. M S Burton posted a very long list of weird injuries to the Usenet newsgroup rec.sport.baseball on 12 June 2003, Subject header: Injury of the week. It starts with
"Carleton Loewer dislocated his left ankle and broke two leg bones after falling 15 feet when he stepped back off a deer stand." You should be able to find it by searching Google Groups. Steve Yaver posted a long list, taken from the Baltimore Sun, to the statlg-l discussion list on 30 January 2004, Subject header: A quick Google Search for.... It includes "Larry Anderson: Strained a rib cage muscle getting out of a Jacuzzi
"Bret Barberie: Rubbed chili juice into his eye
"Wade Boggs: Injured ribs pulling off Cowboy Boots"
and many more. statlg-l posts are archived online.

  9. I seem to recall one about John Smoltz burning himself while ironing a shirt - that he was wearing.

  10. @2 Johnny answered your question, but in case you're interested in a little more info this issue was actually discussed on the blog almost 3 years ago: http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/452
(Check out comment #1 there - the avatar makes no sense :) )

  11. Larry Walker would be an interesting poll for HOF.

  12. Don't forget Matt Latos...on the DL for hurting his arm while sneezing.

  13. Not baseball related, but the greatest injury of all-time remains Gus Frerotte getting a concussion when he head-butted a wall in celebration of a TD pass.

  14. Thanks Raphy!!!

  15. Bryan Mueller Says:

There was a Cubs minor leaguer a few years back who tripped over his Playstation II controller cord while getting up in the middle of the night to take a leak. Obviously not celebrating but interesting nonetheless.

  16. Not professional baseball but UCLA's Tyler Rahmatulla broke his wrist in a dogpile after UCLA made it to the CWS and couldn't play in Omaha

  17. dodgerdave Says:

I'd rather see a pie on a dude's face than shaving cream.

  18. The shaving cream to the face is neither original or funny. Maybe this will put an end to that ignorant practice.

  19. I predict Erik Bedard getting a paper cut and missing another year. Check out http://www.thefantasybaseballguru.com leave comments ask qs and tell me what you think.

  20. I believe it was Glenallen Hill who injured himself while thrashing around in bed while having a nightmare about spiders.

  21. I think Hill claimed to have put his hand through a piece of glass while sleepwalking, having a nightmare about spiders.

  22. I remember a couple of recent incidents (coincidentally both involving the Cubs), although I can't remember exactly when they were.

-Sammy Sosa threw out his back during a sneezing fit.
-Carlos Zambrano had some wrist or hand injury (carpel tunnel?) from having too many AIM conversations with his family back home.

Also, didn't somebody get injured playing Guitar Hero recently?
