I didn't really think it was possible for the Phillies to go into the top of the 9th at home with 9 runs and at least a 5-run lead and then have to worry about hitting in the bottom of that inning.

There have been four pitchers who had 4 extra-base hits in a game, but none since Babe Ruth had 3 doubles and a triple for the Red Sox in a 10-inning game on 9 May 1918. Hasn't happened in the NL since 20 Apr 1895 (Kid Gleason, 2 doubles and 2 triples - I believe this is the same man who went on to manage the 1919 Black Sox).

There were two pinch-hit home runs in extra innings in tonight's Twins-Phillies game (one by each team). Anyone have any idea how often that has happened?

Howard was in the on-deck circle when the last out of the 8th inning was made. With the Phillies ahead by 6 at the time, it didn't look likely that he would get a chance to hit that single. But the way the bullpen let the Twins back into the game in the top of the 9th, it began to feel like he'd get the chance after all. Can you imagine Howard leading off the bottom of the 9th in a 9-9 game or one in which the Phillies were trailing and only aiming for a single? Neither can I!

That's a hell of a good trivia question...what do DiMaggio, Yaz, Brett, and Colbrunn have in common?

BTW I won't publish your email address, Nate, but your username is preposterous.

One thing I looked up after his game was people who hit for the cycle and had a 2nd home run (Howard was a single away). The PI knew of four players: Joe DiMaggio, Carl Yastrzemski, George Brett, and...

Greg Colbrunn.

It made me mad.
