Brewers’ Yovani Gallardo’s 3-RBI games

Posted by Andy on April 27, 2010

Last night, Yovani Gallardo was the Brewers' starting pitcher and he had 3 RBI in the game. They game on a 2-run double and an RBI single. Impressive stuff for a pitcher.

Turns out that this is Gallardo's third 3-RBI game in his young career, comprising only 59 games.

Here are the leaders among pitchers for 3-RBI games within the first 59 games of their careers:

So Gallardo comes in second, although note how many fewer plate appearances he had as compared to Pat Malone.

  1. Yovani can partially thank Randy Johnson (Bruce Bochy?) for intentionally walking JASON KENDALL last year to put two on for him before he hit a homer.

  2. shawn estes has 2 such games, but i don't think they were in his first 59 games. one game i was at, estes hit a grand slam and had 5 rbi's, and sent another ball to the warning track with the bases loaded in the 8th...and pitched a shutout winning 18-0 against the expos in sf. i don't think a pitcher has ever hit 2 gs's in a game.

  3. Morten Jonsson Says:

@Kingcrab: Tony Cloninger hit two grand slams on July 3, 1966. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN196607030.shtml

  4. anything done against the pirates should not be seriously considered.
the brewers beat the pirates in 3 games by a combined 36-1 then go home and lose 3 straight scoring only 4 runs...then the pirates show up and the brewers score 17.
    it ain't the brewers.

  5. On looking at the boxscore it appears not to be the Cloninger game linked above, but I once heard that a pitcher had two grand slams in a game and then came up with bases loaded yet *again* and hit one to the warning track for an out, almost bagging his third. However, since this appears to be the only two-GS game by a pitcher, maybe they were only talking about a long fly ball with bases not loaded, or it was in a minor league game, or I don't remember correctly...

  6. I'm guessing you are thinking of this game:

Robert Person hit a grand slam, a 3-run homer, and also struck out with the bases loaded.

  7. DoubleDiamond Says:

For many years, Tony Cloninger was the only National League player of any position to hit two grand slams in the same game. Eventually, Fernando Tatis did it, too, and got both of them in the same inning off the same pitcher, Chan Ho Park.
