Rough Starts For Yankees Starters In The Stein Era

Posted by Steve Lombardi on April 14, 2010

Javier Vazquez has gotten off to a rough start in his second tour of duty in Yankeeland. In his first two starts of the season he's allowed 4+ ER twice while going less than six innings in each contest. So, how many other starting pitchers have left the starting gate this poorly since the Steinbrenner family has owned the team. Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Game Finder, we can look for these types of things - and, here's the answer:

So, in some ways, this is the 26th time since 1973 that a Yankees starting pitcher has started out poorly over his first few starts of the season. That's not very often, is it, for a unit like the Yankees (who is usually a pretty good team)?

Doesn't mean that Vazquez is cooked this season. Just means that he's not entirely alone in this department...although it's not a very big team picture here.

  1. How does a person search for batting stats and pitching stats at the same time?
(some stat for a pitcher combined with batting...quickest to get 5 wins and a hit during each win...) something like that.

  2. That's the Holy Grail of search engines.
