I can't see that at all. He certainly hasn't performed up to expectations, but he's been alright and still has time to add value. There are probably also benefits to his signing which are not directly related to his performance (marketing in Japan, signing Okajima).

He cost the Red Sox $100 million in cash (posting fee + salary) plus a bunch of other millions in contract perks. His inability to go deep into games really hurts the team by having to pull a lot more innings out of the bullpen, who are lesser pitchers to start with and also have to be used too much.
