Most times getting 1-hit in a season

Posted by Andy on December 23, 2009

The Rangers tied a post-1954 record this past season for most games getting at most 1 hit:

There are some bad, bad teams in there, but that does not include the five most recent teams on the list. That's kind of surprising, since these days there's so much offense that I'd think only the really bad teams would get one-hit so often. But I guess that 4 games is too small of a sample for such general trends to apply.

Here are the post-1954 teams to get no-hit twice in a season:

Rk Tm Year #Matching W L
1 SDP 2001 2 0 2 Ind. Games
2 COL 1996 2 0 2 Ind. Games
3 CAL 1977 2 0 2 Ind. Games
4 DET 1973 2 0 2 Ind. Games
5 CIN 1971 2 0 2 Ind. Games
6 DET 1967 2 1 1 Ind. Games
7 CHC 1965 2 0 2 Ind. Games
8 PHI 1960 2 0 2 Ind. Games

Note that the 1967 Tigers won one of those games. This was the famous game against the Orioles that we've discussed on this blog a few times. The Tigers scored 2 runs in the 9th inning on a few walks, a wild pitch, and a fielder's choice.

One Response to “Most times getting 1-hit in a season”

  1. When I saw the title of this post, I thought it would be players who had one hit in a season.

That list is riddled with pitchers of course. The non-pitching leader is Matt Alexander, a utility player that had 1 hit in each of 1973, 1975, 1976 and 1980. Mostly a pinch-runner, he had 36 total hits in a 374-game career that only gave him 195 PA. Among players with at least 300 games in their career, that is by far the fewest amount of PA. Number 2 is Charles Gipson with 366.

    Trivia!
