When It Pays To Han Solo

Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 9, 2007

The Yankees, in Game 4 of the 2007 ALDS last night, scored four runs - and had 3 solo homers in the game.  This got me wondering as to how many times a team, in the post-season, had hit 3 or more homers in a game and scored 4 or less runs.  The answer, thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Post-Season Team Batting Game Finder is: 24 times.

What's really interesting is that there have been 8 times, within the 24, where a team hit 3+ HRs in a game and they've been all solo-homers and that's the only runs that the team scored in that post-season game.

And, of those 8 times, there are only two times where a team hit 3+ solo homers in a post-season game, accounting for all their runs that day - where they won the game:

October 3, 1996 - NLDS Game 2
October 2, 1998 - ALDS Game 3

It's never happened in an LCS or World Series Game - where the team won.  Maybe this year?
