Beckett’s bad start

Posted by Andy on August 26, 2009

Josh Beckett recently had a bad (and very unusual) start in which he pitched 8 innings but allowed 8 earned runs. Here are the starts since 1980 in which the pitcher has gone at least 8 but also allowed at least 8 runs:

These are mostly pretty good pitchers. Hentgen and Norris are on there twice.

Britt Burns and Norris actually won a game under these circumstances!

  1. JohnnyTwisto Says:

The 76 pitches for Hentgen is obviously incorrect. If you check the boxscore you can see that for some reason, pitch data is only available for some of the innings. Showing a pitch count for that game is very misleading. It's probably better not to display that data at all. Or display it only in a limited way within the play-by-play account, but it should not come up as a "total" when one reads the boxscore or does a search such as Andy's. Someone is going to repeat that misinformation as gospel somewhere else.

  2. Wow, Big Unit still got 12K's into his game! Check out the list of most runs allowed with 10K. Ryan and Johnson dominate, as you'd expect.

  3. DoubleDiamond Says:

For the two in which the pitcher won, I'm guessing that they were games in which they were spotted a big lead early and then were kept in the game even as the lead began to (perhaps gradually) shrink. Some of the closer losses, such as the 13-12 game, may have also been similar.

  4. DoubleDiamond, you don't have to guess - you can click on the entry in the Date column and go right to the linescore. E.g., for the Britt Burns game, you find
(sorry, don't have the html skills to make it line up right)

    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
    - - - - - - - - - - - -
    White Sox 0 2 2 5 0 0 1 0 0 10 12 0
    Orioles 0 0 0 3 5 0 0 0 0 8 8 1

So he was leading 9-0 going into the bottom of the 4th, let the Orioles close within 1 run in the 4th and 5th, and held the lead with shutout pitching thereafter.

  5. Come on gerry---guessing is so much more fun. You take the magic out of everything! :)
