Full lists of career leaders by team

Posted by Andy on August 26, 2007

Chris' recent post about various teams with guys having at least 50 career homers gave me an idea about how to use the PI, and it worked.

It turns out that you can generate lists of the total number of players for each team to meet a certain criteria over their career simply by doing the following: Batting Season Finder, check the bubble at the top for "Find totals for matching seasons or careers", then in the bottom right set your criterion (such as HR >= 50), and then in the top right pick to sort by teams w/players in years. Because you've already chosen to also sum by career, it gives you a result like this:

This is a team-by-team list of all players with at least 50 career homers, 1901 to 1979 (following Chris' search):

That's pretty cool, isn't it? As with Chris' findings, this is limited to homers while playing for a given team. In other words, a player who hit 25 homers for one team and 25 homers for another team wouldn't show up on either team's list since he didn't hit 50 for one team. That applies to all of the following searches as well.

How about the list of players by team with 1000 RBI for that team:

 Franchise Number Players Matching

Toronto Blue Jays 1 Carlos Delgado

I find it surprising to see the Cleveland Indians with just one player in that category. Although among their career RBI leaders are Jim Thome with 927, Nap Lajoie with 919, and Hal Trosky with 911.

Let's generate a few more of these lists for fun:

 Florida Marlins 1 Luis Castillo

Giants lead again, eh? Kind of surprising they haven't won more championships. I might have guessed that the Cardinals would lead but they're just tied for third (with 6 other teams.)

I also thought that maybe the Red Sox wouldn't even appear on here, but they do have tow such players in Harry Hooper and Tris Speaker. Of course, the last time either one of them stole a base for Boston was in 1920.

Looking at a different style of play, at least 50 career sacrifice hits since 1950:

And finally, because I wanted to find a way of making a meaningful list on which the Tampa Bay Devil Rays appear, most players by team with at least 70 career triples:

  1. NICE!

I like this a lot. Please note that the White Sox have the fewest guys over 50 homers among all the Original 16.

Unless I misunsterstand, this can't be right.
Toronto only has 4 players ???
    What about Jesse Barfield ?

  3. jmvbaseball Says:

Sorry, now I see its only up to 1979.

  4. Indeed. The full list of Blue Jays hitters with at least 50 homers, up to present:

  5. [...] a search as I did in my last post, here are all of the players, by team, to have at least 900 R, 900 RBI, and 300 [...]

  6. Do these kinds of searches not work for pitchers? Or am I just unable to properly form the query? How would you do a similar search for pitchers; say, for strike-outs?

  7. I can't get it to work for pitchers either, and for hitters certain stats don't work (such as career BA or OPS+). I'll ask Sean about it.

  8. Oh, and Bruce Bochte only makes the 50HR cut for the M's if you include 1980-1982.

  9. The magic baseball gurus have fixed the searches for pitchers and for the other stats such as BA and OPS.

OK, it was Sean who fixed them.
