All of a team’s hits are doubles

Posted by Andy on June 15, 2009

In this game a little while ago, Oakland's first 7 hits were all doubles. I was wondering if they'd finish with no hits other than doubles, but that didn't happen.

Here is the record (since 1954) for most hits in a game where all of the hits are doubles:

Cnt Date Tm Opp GmReslt PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB IBB SO HBP SH SF ROE GDP SB CS LOB Batrs
+----+-------------+---+----+-------+---+---+--+--+--+--+--+---+--+---+--+---+--+--+---+---+--+--+---+-----+
    1 1998-08-18 ATL SFG W 8-4 38 31 8 9 9 0 0 8 4 1 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 6 11

Wow, 9 hits, all for doubles. Turns out no team has done this feat with 8, 7, or 6 doubles, but a bunch have done it with 5:

Cnt Date Tm Opp GmReslt PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB IBB SO HBP SH SF ROE GDP SB CS LOB Batrs

    2 1998-05-13 OAK @TOR W 4-2 41 32 4 5 5 0 0 4 6 0 10 1 2 0 2 0 0 0 10 10

    3 1997-05-11 PHI COL W 3-1 34 26 3 5 5 0 0 3 5 0 8 0 2 0 1 1 2 1 7 11

    4 1979-07-27(2) MON PIT L 1-9 34 31 1 5 5 0 0 1 3 0 9 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 6 16

    5 1964-07-18 HOU @SFG W 2-1 36 31 2 5 5 0 0 2 3 0 8 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 7 9

I checked this manually by entering, for example, 2B = 12 and H = 12 into the team batting game finder (which returned no games) and then ticking the numbers each down by 1 until finding the answer.

Here are 4 hits, all doubles:

And the rest of the lists are too long to post in their entirety. Three doubles/hits has been done 35 times, 2 doubles/hits has been done 75 times,  and one double being the lonely hit to break up a no-hitter has been done 132 times.

Check back tomorrow for the same thing with triples...

I'd also be interested in seeing a similar list where all hits were for extra bases (of any variety).

I'll cook that one up for you later this week, Tom
