Considering that NHL and NBA seasons span two calendar years, I guess abutting the MLB season on either end would count. I know there have been a number of players that have played in both MLB and the NFL in the same season (Bo Jackson and Neon Deion Sanders jump immeditely to mind, but I know there were others, too).
