Joe Torre had the longest hitting streak to start the season, 22 games (for players playing all of their team's games). It was in his MVP season, 1971.
I also noticed that 1971 was his only year as a full-time player where he played only one position (3B). Coincidence?

I'm not sure how much it mattered that he played solely 3B and no 1B, but it's certainly no coincidence that that was the season he moved off catcher for good.
