Lots of pitchers from long-gone eras on here. Wilbur Wood sticks out as a much more recent pitcher. In 1972, Wood started 49 games and completed 20 of them, amassing 376 IP. That's how he got 144 plate appearances. He did get 17 singles with 7 RBI and 8 runs scored.

Mike Gallego's 1995 also sticks out as the only season from the last 30 years. He got 28 singles in 120 AB, good for a .233 BA (far better than most on this list.)

Looking at just the last 30 years:

Finally, here are the most PAs  in a season by a guy with no extra-base hits but also a BA of at least .300:

Almost no pitchers here. But check out Pete Donohue in 1929: 60 AB, 20 singles, and 13 RBI. Very nice indeed.

One Response to “Most plate appearances in a season with no extra-base hits”

  1. Donohue started hot, over 100 wins by age 25, then his career fell off a cliff. By 1929, he was toast on the mound, though evidently he could hit a little. Look at these ERAs, starting at age 24 in 1925; 3.08, 3.37, 4.11, 4.74, 5.42, 6.17, 6.48, 7.82 and out. Talk about a steady decline!
