This Morning’s Site Bug Has Been Fixed

Posted by Neil Paine on July 5, 2011

Some of you may have noticed that we had a number of data issues this morning, so I just wanted to post a note to let you know things are fixed now, and explain why the issue happened.

This morning, we received new data about the playing record of an obscure 1890 American Association pitcher named Harry Stine. Unfortunately, because of a glitch in the process of incorporating this new info, we ended up with two Harry Stines in the database, which broke everything for players whose names came after Stine in the alphabet. (This is why searches for 'Thome' or 'Youkilis' returned no results, and why 2011 teams were missing players with surnames in that range.)

Fortunately, Sean was able to patch things up before jetting off to SABR 41, so the site should currently be back to normal. Yesterday's boxscores are on the front page, current players have 2011 stat lines, and Omar Vizquel is 3rd among active players in hits once more.

Thanks for your patience while we worked through this issue, and as always, please continue to let us know about any site bugs you see via the feedback form.

Okay, this explains it. I thought I woke up in some alternate universe where Tim Wakefield didn't exist.

  2. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

Gotta admit, that one did have me befuddled. Thanks for the fix-it.

  3. Johnny Says:

I just figured the site was updated the All Stars that were announced and crediting player's with an "AS" in the margin. lol

  4. David Says:

This has nothing to do with the subject at hand, but please that for some players born in West Germany the spelling is "Frankfurt", not "Frankfort".
Technically, Frankfurt am Main. (The other Franfurt (Oder) is in what used to be East Germany.)

    Shane Victorino - GONE!

  6. DavidRF Says:

Now I'm curious. What more did we learned about Harry Stine? One game, 8 IP, 17 H, 4 BB, 8 ER and a loss. Which of that is new? 🙂

  7. Jeff Says:

I wish I could build a time machine and go back and tell Harry Stine about this.

I guess he'd be pleased, but he'd have a lot of questions.

  8. Spartan Bill Says:

    @ Jeff,

I think you will lose him at the term "pitch count"

  9. Darrel Says:

It was Harry's way of getting 15 minutes of fame!

  10. Arbiter Says:

Actually, what was learned is that the 1890 player isn't Harry Stine at all, but a completely different Stein (no first name as yet determined, and odds are his first name's lost to history). So, looks like the bug isn't *completely* fixed as yet.

#10 - Right, in order to stop the chaos that Stine/Stein was causing on the entire site yesterday morning, we had to roll back to the earlier version of his info. I believe Sean will be able to get him updated without all hell breaking loose when he gets back from SABR.
