Baseball-Reference.com-- Baseball's History: 1871-Now
These are just assorted little facts about the teams in the league.
- Tm - Team ID (see A list of ID's)
- E - Errors committed in the field
- DP - Double Plays in the field
- FP% - Team Fielding Percentage
- DefEff - Defensive Efficiency. This is a Bill James
measure that estimates the number of batted balls turned into outs by
a team. The estimate for plays made is based on outs minus things
like double plays, caught stealings and outfield assists or total
batters faced minus strikeouts, walks, HBP, Hits and errors times a
factor. These aren't perfectly known historically, so some of these
ratings may be dubious.
- Attendance - Attendance for that team's home games
- Att/G - Approximate Attendance/Home Game (I just divided total games by two to estimate home games.)
- pW-pL - Pythagorean Win-Loss Record
- BPF - Batting Park Factor
- PPF - Pitching Park Factor
- AgeB - Average Age of Batters (Explained Below)
- AgeP - Average Age of Pitchers (Explained Below)
- HOF - Number of Hall of Famers who played for the team
for at least one game. Please note that some of these players may
have been Hall of Famers for things other than playing (like Branch
Rickey).
- AS - All-Stars on the team for that season. This counts
the players on the All-Star game roster representing this team.
- aAS - All-Time All-Stars on the team for that
season. This is the number of players on the roster that have ever
appeared in an All-Star game. Note that this occurrence may have been
in later seasons than the one you are looking at.
- Managers - You know who they are. Multiple managers are
listed in the order they worked for the team.
The pitching team ages are a bit complicated to compute, so I'll
start with the batting ages. For batting, I just used the weighted
average of the ages of each player on the roster. The age was
weighted by the player's at bats + games. This gives a bit of a boost
to widely used bench players.
For pitching age, I weighted the ages by 3 * GS + G + SV, so a
starter's results will be weighted by 130 or so, a good reliever by 60
and a closer by 90 or so. I like the values this gives to various
members of the pitching staff.
